President's Section

Meet the President:

Steve has been involved in officiating for most of his adult life, officiating Basketball, Softball, Rugby and Swimming events.

He started in swimming as a timer when his children joined the Beverly YMCA Barracudas. After one year, he joined the officiating ranks as a Level One YMCA official and an USS Stroke and Turn official, quickly progressing to a Level Two YMCA official and a USS Referee. In 2001, he joined EMSOA and in 2002 became a CSOA certified official.

Current certifications are:

  • Level Three YMCA Official, responsible for overseeing training of swim officials in New England, New York and New Jersey.
  • USS Referee
  • CSOA Regional Director for the Northeast Section, which includes New England, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

Steve and his wife, June, have three children. Matthew is currently the assistant swim coach for the Women’s team at Harvard. Jessica, who swam at Harvard and was a co-captain of the team, is working in Austin, Texas for Facebook. Jaclyn swam at the University of Maryland, College Park, and is working in Boston for an advertising firm.

Steve is retired from Verizon and Salem State University and currently seeking something else to keep him occupied. He has officiated at numerous New England and National meets, including the last twelve YMCA Short Course National Championships, the last fourteen YMCA Long Course Championships, USS National Junior Championships, Atlantic Coast Conference Championships and last years Division 1 NCAA Women’s Championships.

Meet the Vice President:

Marian Nihan has been involved in swimming and officiating for over 40 years. As a high school and college student, she taught Red Cross swimming and soon after she became the Aquatics Director at the Lawrence YWCA. For over three decades, Marian conducted an extensive swim program from her backyard pool. Through the Y, Marian became involved in officiating Y and High School meets. Currently, she is certified in EMSOA, CSOA and US Swim. In 2017, Marian was honored as the Eastern Mass Swim Coaches “Priscilla Davis Award” recipient and in 2018, she was named an MIAA “Official of the Year” for Eastern Mass Swimming and Diving. 

Marian enjoys swimming with US Masters and has coached the North Suburban YMCA Masters team for many years.

Marian and her husband Gary have three children, all of whom swam on age group teams. David and his wife Kara live in Vermont, where he is a sales rep in the outdoor recreation industry. Lianne is no stranger to the EMSOA and swimming community. She swam for Springfield College and currently coaches the Austin Prep swim team. She is a middle school special ed. teacher and officiates high school meets as well. Tim supports adults with special needs and continues his education in the field of human services. Marian and Gary enjoy summer vacations in Maine and winter ski trips with the entire Nihan crew.

Marian recently retired from teaching. She is a life -long learner who completed an MEd in Special Education and an EdS in Reading Disabilities , both over the age of 50. She continues her love of reading and learning in retirement, and hopes to return to tutoring in the post-Covid era. Marian enjoys hiking, biking, skiing, and of course, swimming.
